Notice re: Fenton Pump Station

(Monday, August 31, 2015) Fenton Pump Station in rural northwest Pitt Meadows has been without power since Saturday’s windstorm. Due to the need for extensive tree removal in order to access the station, BC Hydro’s current estimate for having the station up and running is 6pm tonight. However, due to high internal ditch levels and a high volume of rainfall expected this evening, localized flooding in low-lying areas around Richardson Road is possible. In case of a public works emergency, please call 604.465.2465.

Mayor's Message in Response to the Weekend Storm & Cleanup

On behalf of Council, I would like to thank our community for pulling together during one of the worst storms Pitt Meadows has seen. At its height, nearly everyone in Pitt Meadows was challenged in some way by Saturday’s windstorm. Significant damage and power outages are still being reported in Pitt Meadows and across the region. We have roads closed and hazards due to fallen trees and power lines, and ask that you use caution as you travel about. Safety remains our top priority.

Our fire and public works crews have been working non-stop since Saturday afternoon and are doing a great job keeping residents safe. I want to acknowledge and express my thanks to all of them and other City staff who manned the emergency operations centre over the weekend.

There is a high volume of calls for both downed trees and powerlines; these calls are being prioritized based on life safety and an existing property threat. Unfortunately, we, too, are relying on the power restoration lists that BC Hydro is providing publicly and cannot offer any better estimates of times for power restoration or when Hydro may arrive to remove downed trees. BC Hydro’s website has been experiencing technical difficulties but here is the link so customers can see if their outage has been reported: https://www.bchydro.com/outages/orsMain.jsp.

We ask that downed power lines be reported directly to BC Hydro at https://twitter.com/bchydro, or dial *HYDRO (*49376) on cellphone; or call 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766) on corded landline. They are also advising of new weather related outages and short interruptions as circuits are switched to restore power. Cleanup of lines and felled trees will begin once all power is restored.

As we continue to address the cleanup in Pitt Meadows, please share these tips with your friends and neighbours: https://www.bchydro.com/safety-outages/power-outages/prepare-for-outages/prepare-your-home.html. It is a good reminder to all of us just how important it is to be prepared.

As part of our regular emergency response protocols, we will be doing an internal assessment of the situation and our response and  the response of the other agencies. A report will be tabled with Council in due course and made part of the public agenda.

John Becker,
Mayor
City of Pitt Meadows
