Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Celebrates Volunteer Week: April 22 to 29

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows, March 29, 2006

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows celebrates National Volunteer Week April 22 to 29 with a number of special events to recognize and appreciate the people who generously donate their time and skills to our communities. This year's national theme is “Volunteers Grow Community.”

The week will kick off with a number of non-profit agencies being involved in the Earth Day celebration in the town centre of Maple Ridge at Memorial Peace Park. The Volunteer Interagency Coordinators are one such group that will be on hand with plenty of volunteer opportunity information for interested citizens looking to get involved in community projects.

A number of agencies including the Districts of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are planning special recognition events that allow the opportunity to treat volunteers to fun activities and refreshments. One such event is an Ice Cream Social for youth taking place on Thursday, April 27, 7:00 PM at the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre.

Free workshops are offered for volunteers who wish to upgrade their skills; for example, a media workshop is planned for non-profits, sports groups, and events organizers. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about developing effective relations with the media, creating press releases, and handling interviews with reporters. Volunteers will also be offered the chance to learn about Aquatics volunteering, to develop skills for working with clients with special needs, and to upgrade their Emergency First Aid training in separate workshops.

As with previous years, Parks and Leisure Services offers community volunteers a free week of Leisure Time at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre or the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre. Participating non-profit agencies are able to request free admission passes to hand out to their volunteers and the leisure time gift is available for the week of April 22 to 29. For more details, call the Volunteer Office in the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre at 604-467-7459.

Finally, watch for displays in the Maple Ridge Arts Centre Theatre that will be available for viewing during Volunteer Week. Participating non-profit groups are decorating hanging umbrellas that will create a colourful display of volunteer appreciation. Other visual materials will also highlight the work of volunteers and offer a chance to learn about volunteer programs existing in the community.
