Pitt Meadows Reaffirms Stance on Abernathy Connector

October 18, 2006

PITT MEADOWS BC: - On October 17, 2006 Pitt Meadows Council reaffirmed it's original resolution adopted February 3, 2004 regarding the Abernethy Connector as follows:

"...THAT Council, upon the recommendation of the Council in Committee, reaffirm its original motion dated February 3, 2004 as follows:

"THAT TransLink and the Agricultural Land Commission be advised of Council's preference that the Abernethy Connector be located as close as possible to the Southern boundary of Parcel C, Explanatory Plan 5113 (Formosa Nursery), in the vicinity of 203 Street, in order that the agricultural productivity of the nursery can be protected to the greatest extent possible and allow for sufficient noise attenuation to be provided to nearby residents."

The alignment of the Abernethy Connector is consistent with the Master Municipal Agreement endorsed by the District of Pitt Meadows, the District of Maple Ridge, Langley Township, and the City of Surrey on May 2, 2005. In reconsidering the alignment as it relates to the Formosa Nursery property, Council took into account information submitted by the Agricultural Land Commission, TransLink and other stakeholders, and inputs regarding other properties in the area.

Mayor Don MacLean stated, "...the District of Pitt Meadows is satisfied best efforts have been made to locate the Abernethy Connector taking into consideration agricultural interests, property impacts on both sides of the Municipal boundary, and transportation design issues." Mayor MacLean said "...it is an unfortunate reality that transportation improvements in conjunction with the Golden Ears Bridge will impact properties along the corridor. These impacts need to be balanced, however, with the greater good of ensuring the broader interests of the community are being achieved. The issue of traffic management is another priority of Council and improvements associated with the Golden Ears Bridge have long been anticipated."
