November 7, 2006

PITT MEADOWS, B. C. - Today Mayor Don MacLean announced Pitt Meadows Council has agreed to enter into a purchase and sale agreement with Allegro Properties Inc. for the development of a Senior Citizen's Housing Complex and Public Senior Citizens' Recreation Pavilion immediately west of the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre.

The Recreation Pavilion will be approximately 9,500 square feet in size featuring a large hall and stage, a lounge, a craft and multipurpose room , a Board room, a lunch counter and a computer lab. The facility will complement Seniors' use of the Family Recreation Centre next door and will provide much needed room for growth in the type of activities available to seniors in Pitt Meadows and the west end of Maple Ridge.

The Pavilion will be programmed by area seniors through a not for profit organization contracting with the Parks and Leisure Services Commission and will be maintained by the developer/operator of the residential complex. The project has been endorsed by representatives of the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society and the local Old Age Pension Organization who were instrumental in planning the facility.

The agreement reached between the parties will see the District sell the land for the new building to Alegro Properties Inc at fair market value. The District will then lease the Seniors Pavilion for a period of sixty years for the price of the land, which will represent 70% of the cost of the Pavilion's construction.

In making the announcement Mayor MacLean commented "All of the members of Council are very pleased with the agreement and believe both the housing project and recreation pavilion will go a long way toward meeting seniors' needs within our community. This was a project all of our Council members identified as important during the last election and they are very happy to see it come to fruition during this mandate."

Providing all the necessary subject conditions and zoning approval is granted by next Spring the facility should open in 2008.
