City Receives $4.6 Million For Pitt Polder Pump Upgrade
Pitt Meadows, BC – Mayor John Becker was joined at City Hall on Saturday by the Honourable  Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, MP Dan Ruimy, MP Jati Sidhu  and MLA Doug Bing to announce a $4.6 million grant through the Small Communities Fund to finance a critical upgrade of the Pitt Polder Pump Station.
“The Pitt Polder Pump Station is an essential piece of infrastructure for disaster mitigation and our local agricultural industry,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker. “This funding partnership with the Provincial and Federal governments ensures that we can proceed with a much-needed upgrade to this historic pump station. It will allow for the safe passage of fish, help keep our fields arable, and benefit farming families in our community.”
With 86 percent of Pitt Meadows in the floodplain, the area is divided into four drainage areas served by six pump stations. The Pitt Polder Pump Station serves Area 4, the second largest drainage area in Pitt Meadows, made up of 1650 hectares of agricultural land. Originally built in 1952, the pump station is located north of Harris Road about a kilometre off Rannie Road.
The pump station has long since reached the end its useful life. Due to its age, obtaining equipment or spare parts for repair or replacement is no longer possible. City public works staff have also reported that sink holes have begun to appear within the last few years.
“This project was one that City staff have been focused on for the past several years due to its critical nature. The City faced no viable options other than replacement, with the age of the pump station and the maintenance and its myriad of functional issues. This funding is both welcome and timely,” said Mayor Becker.
The City’s reserves will fund the municipal portion or $2.3 million of the project. The new pump station will meet the current Federal and Provincial standards for environmental safety and efficiency.
