Emergency Operations Exercise and ShakeOut BC: Update

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows: The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows joint Emergency Operations Exercise scheduled for October 5 and 6, has been rescheduled to February 2012.

During 2011, the Emergency Operations Centre has had a number of low level activations. In Spring of 2011, the Emergency Operations teams from both communities were active in monitoring the Fraser River levels as part of the Annual Spring Freshet. In addition, parts of the Emergency Operations were activated for a number of emergency calls such as the fire in Ruskin that destroyed a shingle mill.

The Exercise, rescheduled to February, will present the Emergency Operations Centre with a scenario that will require the highest level of activation, which will allow newer members of the team to interact and test the full capacity of the planning and logistics of our Emergency Plan.

Second ShakeOut BC scheduled for October 20, 2011.

On January 26, 2011, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, along with our partners at School District No. 42 participated in the inaugural ShakeOut BC drill. Staff from partner organizations participated in the drill and used the opportunity to review planning and procedures in the event of a disaster. This event also featured a ‘Grab and Go Kit Challenge' between Pitt Meadows Mayor MacLean, Maple Ridge Mayor Daykin and School Board Chair Clarkson. School Board Chair Clarkson won the challenge, which highlighted the importance of personal preparation for an earthquake. Almost half a million BC residents registered their participation in that exercise.

After the exercise, organizers contacted all of the organizations involved and determined that there was a benefit to aligning the BC exercise with similar ShakeOut drills in California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho and Guam, as well as the Yukon Territory here in Canada. That's why the second ShakeOut BC Drill will be happening on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 am.

The City of Pitt Meadows and the District of Maple Ridge encourage area residents to go to shakeoutbc.ca and register their participation in this program. This drill will now be held annually each fall to help promote earthquake awareness and preparation.

Both the City of Pitt Meadows and the District of Maple Ridge maintain a series of pages at pittmeadows.bc.ca and mapleridge.ca that have information and links to Provincial and Federal resources for Emergency Planning.
