FINAL TOUCHES PUT ON NEW PITT MEADOWS LIBRARY

Pitt Meadows, BC: The Community's living room and a “third place” to spend time with family and friends is how Pitt Meadows Library Manager, Caro O'Kennedy, is characterizing the new Pitt Meadows library space which is set to open February 29, 2012. “This has been a wonderful project to see through to completion. The old library has been a central part of Pitt Meadows and the new 12,000 square foot facility will continue the tradition of learning, education and recreation within this growing community.

The new facility will include a 12 station computer lab, expanded areas for youth and children and an increasein books and other materials. “Libraries have become a social epicenter of communities and this one will include all the programs and resources of traditional libraries coupled with exciting new technology.” O'Kennedy added.

One of the first changes customers will see is the new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system that eliminates manual check-out and check-in process by the conversion of barcodes to RFID tags for the entire collection of 32,000 books and Audio Visual titles. The Pitt Meadows Public Library is the first to convert in the Fraser Valley Regional Library system.

Customers will be impressed by the look and feel of the new sophisticated space with warm colors, woodwork, natural light and views of the Spirit Square and mountains. The second storey facility is part of the overall development plan for the civic centre. Later this fall, the Library, City Hall, the Pitt Meadows Family Recreational Centre will be joined by the new Wesbrooke Senior Centre and city owned Seniors Facility.

Mayor Walters believes that the new library is a perfect addition to the growing town centre. “The Meadows Gate Village was planned in the centre to offer housing, recreation, shopping and transit access, including West Coast Express, all within walking distance. “

Due dates for all library material borrowed in the last month, have been adjusted to allow customers to return their items after February 29 at the automated return located in the breezeway near the entrance to the new library. Anyone wishing to return items earlier, are welcome to return them to either the Maple Ridge Public Library or the Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam. For enquiries about your library account please call either one of these libraries at 604-467-7147 or 604-927-7999 respectively.

The well used 30 year old library will close at 9:00 pm on February 15, 2012 giving the staff just two weeks to move and set up the new facility on the corner of Harris and Ford Road. The current building across from City Hall will be repurposed for civic and community purposes. An official event for the grand opening is being arranged for next month.
