Councilor David Murray resigns from Pitt Meadows Council

PITT MEADOWS, BC:  The City of Pitt Meadows confirms the receipt of Councilor David Murray’s resignation, effective January 2, 2018 following an unpaid leave of absence.

“Our Council is satisfied to have reached an agreement with Mr. Murray that is in the best interests of all parties. We appreciate that this situation has caused great concern in our community and among our staff,” said Mayor John Becker.

A January 2 resignation alleviates the legislated requirement to hold a by-election and keeps the decision in the hands of City Council. This gives Council time to evaluate the merits, costs and staff resources required to conduct a by-election in such close proximity to the regularly scheduled election in October 2018.

“Mr. Murray will cease immediately participating in all City activities or Council business. My thoughts are with the victim. I hope now that David Murray is no longer a sitting member of Council offers some comfort to the victim, her family and the community,” said Becker.

The City has a responsibility to provide the community with safe public spaces and programs and staff with a safe work environment and we will continue to uphold this responsibility.

“We are fortunate that in Pitt Meadows we have not had to previously address a criminal conviction of an elected official while holding office. We regret not having been more proactive in our communications,” said Becker.

“There is no legislative authority to act unilaterally and remove the official. There are no policies and procedures and we will be addressing this deficiency.”

Where possible, Council will advocate for changes to the Community Charter, calling for inclusion of language to suspend or terminate an elected official convicted of a criminal offence.
