Call for Volunteers at the Pitt Meadows Art Gallery

The Pitt Meadows Art Gallery is seeking volunteers to act as Gallery Volunteers. We are looking for friendly and outgoing individuals who enjoy interacting with the public.  Volunteering is a fun way to learn about art and how Galleries work, meet new people and contribute to your community.  Without volunteers the Gallery will not be able to operate.  Volunteers help make it happen.

Gallery Volunteers will be responsible for providing courteous assistance through greeting the public, processing sales and issuing receipts and providing information to visitors of the Gallery.   

At the Gallery we build an environment that allows our Volunteers to give back to the community while developing their own skills, gaining valuable experience and finding personal fulfillment.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome visitors into the gallery
  • Provide visitors with information when needed and answer questions
  • Answer phones and all enquiries
  • Process sales transactions and issue receipts
  • Balance daily sales and debit/credit card receipts
  • Provide information to the public on gallery exhibitions and programs
  • Prepare any reports as necessary
  • Communicate effectively with Cultural Services staff, other volunteers and the volunteer coordinator and maintain effective working relationships
  • Monitor the gallery to ensure artworks are not touched and all objects are safe
  • Other administrative tasks as required
  • Check in and out for shifts
  • Record volunteer hours
  • Ensure the Gallery is clean at all times
  • Ensure that all visitors leave at closing time
  • Ensure all safety measures are followed

Additional responsibilities for show openings or other Gallery events may include:

  • Work with the public and assist at events like exhibition openings and artists talks
  • Preparing and serving food trays
  • Serving drinks
  • Assisting with set-up/clean-up of spaces and equipment
  • Assist with hosting Gallery events
  • Help the public interact with artists

Requirements/Skills

  • Friendly and outgoing with people of all ages
  • Able to commit to the position for a least 6 months
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Able to work alone
  • Public speaking skills
  • A passion for art
  • Possess good communication and people skills
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Be able to work independently but also as part of a team
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Check
  • Age 16 years or older
  • Are responsible and reliable
  • Be able to operate basic office equipment such as , computer, phones, printer, scanner, POS system
  • Routine office functions including sales and merchandise reconciliations
  • Visitor registration, e-news list
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively with Cultural Services staff, other volunteers and the volunteer coordinator and maintain effective working relationships
  • Effective problem solving skills

We request a minimum 6-month commitment to the Gallery, volunteering at various times throughout the year. Volunteers will receive training on each exhibition, and are expected to attend orientation sessions to familiarize themselves with the Gallery.
