About the Fraser Valley Regional Library

The first regional library system in North America, the Fraser Valley Regional Library sprang to life in 1930. A bold experiment financed by the Andrew Carnegie Corporation of New York, the regional library set out to prove that a cooperative library service could bring the benefits of literature, knowledge and information to diverse and widely scattered population centres in what was then rural British Columbia. With enormous energy and the cooperation of member municipalities and school districts, the Library's first director, Dr. Helen Gordon Stewart, undertook the work of organizing the District, selecting books and staff and purchasing a truck suitable for use as a mobile library.

In order to continue the service after the Carnegie funds were exhausted, a referendum was held in 1934 where residents were asked to vote whether or not they wished to support the library through local taxes. Even though the vote was held in the middle of the Great Depression, twenty of the original twenty-four areas voted "YES" and the Fraser Valley Union Library became the first regional library in both British Columbia and North America.

Today, the library's 13,000 sq. km. service area stretches from Delta to Boston Bar, and hosts over 22 libraries. Currently, over 2.6 million people visit the Fraser Valley Regional Library System and borrow more than 5 million items annually. The FVRL is funded with taxes raised in the communities it serves, as well as by a Government of BC operating grant. The FVRL has a current budget in excess of $17 million.
